Here's another card combining the Unity Stamp Co. So & So Loves stamp and the Hero Arts Whoo Loves You set. They just go so well together, eh?

See how I carved the sentiment (Who (heart)s U) on the tree? Tee hee.

I love, LOVE, LUH-UH-UHVE the new Cosmo Cricket Early Bird line. So adorably retro and sporting my favorite color combos at the moment. This particular paper is the "B" side of Cherry Pie.

The scalloped square is from Cricut's Storybook cartridge. The aqua background is the Cuttlebug Diamonds in the Rough emboss.

Woodland Love Note

I think this card is pretty adorable if I may say so myself.

I made it mainly for the Hero Arts weekly challenge of which the theme is "manly" this week. Do you think it's "manly" enough? The love squirrel image is from the Hero Arts Whoo Loves You clear stamp set. The trees image is the Unity Stamp Co. So & So Loves... single. The images are colored with ink and a blender pen.

The argyle background is a Cricut die cut. The argyle and colors were inspired by that gorgeous DCWV ribbon. The green diamond shaped brads were originally silver ones that I covered in Ranger Distressed Embossing Powder. You know, there's something quite powerful in discovering that you can alter the color on just about anything with a little ink or embossing powder. It opens up a whole new (and more cost-effective) crafting horizon.

Finally, this card follows this week's Mojo Monday sketch #88:

Plum Star Search Week #3 challenge (bling!) - Every Artist

For those of you who haven't been by before, I'm participating in the Vintage Plum Star Search 5 week challenge to find their July guest designer. This is week #3 and the challenge is "All That Glitters." For some reason this challenge threw me for a loop. I didn't want to end up overdoing the bling. It took me until Wednesday to identify my subject matter and then another day to figure out the direction. This one's been slow going but I think, in the end, it came out pretty cool.

The ideas began with a quote I happened upon: "Every artist was first an amateur" by Ralph Waldo Emerson. My daughter has recently been watercoloring with purpose (ie making pictures instead of sloshing muddied colors onto paper) and this was a current fav of mine:

So, I thought I'd build a layout around this pic. Well, as you can see, ideas evolve and the process of painting that picture became the focus of the layout. I am sure the artwork pic will make its way onto a layout of its own for the facing page in the scrapbook soon.

I felt it was only fitting that my background for the layout be watercolored. So, I dug out this Rusty Pickle Pop Star paper (below) and the Crayola waterpaints, and my daughter and I sat down for a joint watercoloring session (in which she created a gorgeous multicolored "sunflower", but that's a pic for another post...).

I wanted the quote to mimic the lettering already on the paper so I freehanded it as best I could and then included a couple swirls, too.

Of course, the challenge was to bling a layout so out came the Stickles. I also included a Heidi Swapp bling flower and blinged up the Making Memories mini bulldog clip.

Finally, the fancy frame was cut using my Quickutz Silhouette machine on white paper. I brayered it with some Ranger Distressed Ink, doodled a border like the one on the paper, and then blinged that up, too, with more Stickles.

I'm hoping I didn't go too far with the bling as had worried me to temporary inaction.

p.s. I apologize for the less-than-stellar qualilty of the photos of the layout. I intended to try to get a few more shots of it in morning daylight tomorrow but unfortunately the layout fell victim to a shifting chair and a flying cup of coffee. :o( It's still in tact but with a few extra "splashes" of a non-coordinating color and the fancy frame got ripped a bit but I glued it back together. Guess now the layout has an "antiqued" feel (and coffeehouse smell) to it.

Hip Hop Hangover Part 2 - Good Times

OK, so I came up with one more Unity Stamp Co. card worthy of Hip Hop Hangover! This one uses an image from the October KOTM.

The martini glass and olive are Cricut die cuts. The bubbly background is a resist using a Hero Arts stamp. The color scheme on this card was also inspired by Moxie Fab World's citrus challenge (hence the martini being yellow and therefore I figure a "lemon drop" martini):

Unity Hip Hop Hangover

Happy Friday everyone!

I feel like I got a bit of my creative mojo back today. After this post it's back to my craft room to work on my Vintage Plum Star Search week #3 challenge - "All That Glitters". I gotta tell you, I've been feeling stumped about this one. It's so easy to go overboard. I'm hoping my great creative flow with the following two cards carries over! Check back Saturday for the post of my "bling" creation - see how it turned out.

Both of these cards sport images from Unity Stamp Co.'s May Kit of the Month. It's just so darn cute!!

"ENJOY YOUR DAY"

Both images were embossed and then colored with Stampin' Up! ink and a blender pen. Then I cut each image out. The patterned paper is Basic Grey's Urban Prairie.

The layout of the card is inspired by the Taylored Expressions Cupcake Challenge sketch #69:

"HAPPY"

This image is also colored with SU! ink & a blender pen. The edges are sponged on. The herringbone (sp?) background is Cuttlebug. The base paper is Certainly Celery and then I sponged Wild Wasabi over it. The I Cuttlebugged it and sanded the embossed areas to reveal the Certainly Celery color underneath.

The color combination for this card is inspired by Moxie Fab World's citrus color challenge this week.

Hero Art Go Green Pt. 2 - Celebrate!

Here's another offering for the Hero Arts Go Green challenge this week.

May 2011 issue

The large Chinese lantern is made from a recycled ribbon spool. (I knew saving all these would benefit me someday!)

The adorable doll, lantern, and flowers stamps are Hero Arts (CL297). The parasol is from the Cricut Happily Ever After cartridge. It's hard to see it in the pic, but the doll's jacket and the large lantern are stamped with gold flowers. The tassle on the lamp was white ribbon - I separated it then colored it with gold ink, too.

The layout for this card is from the Taylored Expressions Cupcake Challenge sketch #69 this week. I flipped it and rotated it 90 degrees:

Attempt the Impossible - Plum Star Search challenge #2 - Medium Madness

It's week 2 on Vintage Plum Star Search and the challenge this week was "medium madness" - to use various medium other than the usual ink and paper. You can see my post in the Vintage Plum gallery HERE.

(Hey, does anyone out there in cyberland know how to make the pictures so that you can click on them and see them bigger? I can't seem to find a setting for this anywhere. If you know, please leave me a comment! Thanks!)

On to the techniques used.

The background paper is swished with Making Memories paints and then swiped with Delta Texture Magic (kind of a colored spackle) using a palette knife. Then I smooshed a paper towel over the wet paints to create a bit more texture. The yellow and red swooshes are "painted" on with a toothpick and then swiped with my finger.

The Tim Holtz stamp is embossed. "to be all that is possible, we must attempt the impossible. to be all that we can be, we must dream of being more."

The moon, earth, and some of the swooshes are drawn on with gray, white, and black pens. I think this is the first time I've drawn on a layout with a pen - other than writing or outlining an image.

There's also a sort of corner frame drawn on in pen in the lower left corner, too. This was inspired by THIS LAYOUT over on scrapjacked.com.

The rocket form was cut out of chipboard (I used a fruit snacks box, I think - repurposing!). Then I created another form out of an aluminum serving tray (repurposing!). The aluminum is embossed using various metal working tools such as a ball & cup, a Ten Seconds Studios texture plate, and free doodling using a teflon "pen". The aluminum was then adhered to the chipboard rocket. I backed the windows with reflective metallic paper by Best Occasions. The rocket was then swiped with Metallic Rub-Ons paste with my finger. Some of the diamonds are done in a green paste but you can't see it very well on the pic.

I am having so much fun with these challenges! The huge bonus would be to win the overall challenge and get to be Vintage Plum's July guest designer. I need your votes to win!

Brayered sunset & cattails

The format of this card was CASE'd from the uberly talented Patty Bennett (HERE).




The cattails and grasses are from the Cricut Wild Card cartridge. (I'm tellin' ya - if you only buy 2 cartridges ever, get Wild Card and Storybook. They are both so versatile!)

It's hard to tell from my pic, but the cattails and grasses are shaded with Ranger Distress Ink in Vintage Photo.

I left off a sentiment because I figured this card could be be good for Father's Day, a guy's birthday, encouragement, or even sympathy.

Unity Hip Hop Hangover (post #2) - Heroes & Stampin' Out Alzheimer's

I'm am so excited to be taking part in Unity Stamp Co.'s Hip Hop Hangover for the first time! This week's theme is Heroes in honor of Memorial Day this weekend.

Here's my card in honor of this holiday and the heroes to which it pays homage.

"Hero" can be a very subjective and very personal designation. My hero is my Grandpa who passed away this past March, a victim of Alzheimer's. This man served our country in WWII, raised a family selflessly, then raised the next generation just as selflessly (me). He was a hard worker, never complained, and was the most sweet, loveable, and smiley guy you ever met. It's so unfair that not only the last 4 years of his life, but the memories of his life and family, were ripped away from him by this horrible disease.

This upcoming week, May 25 to June 1, the team over on the Paper Craft Planet website are hosting an online stamping and scrapbooking event to help raise awareness and donations for Alzheimer's Disease. They're setting up a site, stampinoutalzheimers.ning.com, where you can participate in various paper craft activities and challenges all week long. Over 30 sponsors have generously donated prizes for the week's festivities. Any size donation - 100% of which will be donated to the Alzheimer's Association - will grant you access to the website.

Unity Hip Hop Hangover! (post #1)

I'm so excited to finally have been able to participate in Unity Stamp Co.'s Hip Hop festivities over on the Split Coast Stamper's website!

How Old Would You Be? - Caardvarks & Mojo Monday Challenges

This card satisfies the challenge on two sites today - Caardvarks Unity Quote challenge and Mojo Monday's week 86 sketch challenge.

The Caardvarks' Unity Quote challenge was to make a card with a quote on it - if you're not familiar, Angela from Unity Stamp Co. loves to collect quotes, especially those she can design into another stamp. I Unity Stamp Co.!! I am finally a proud owner of one of their sets - Tiny Trinity - which I used on this card. The quote says, "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are? - Satchel Paige". Seriously, think about it! How old would YOU be? Up until this past year, I think I would've been someone in their 20s. (I'd even gotten carded about a year ago!) Now, I'm not so sure. I feel and think I look more my age nowadays (38 *gasp*).

Remember this stamp? It's a Stampin' Up! Sale-a-bration stamp from 2 years ago. It's one of my absolute favorites! It's HUGE and great for scrapbooking. I think the flower is almost 6" high! I've shown it next to a $1 bill to give you an idea of how big it is. (And, no, the $1 isn't part of the candy. LOL!) It's a great size for the "kissing" technique, too. (Inking the stamp then pressing another smaller detailed stamp to it, which removes a bit of ink and gives the stamped image a cool patterned look.)

OK, so on to my week #1 entry. The challenge is fussy cutting. Here's what's fussy cut on this layout: "imagine", the circles border on the left, individual circles that are popped up on the border, the triangles in the "wheels" in the top right corner, and the flower accent in the bottom right corner.

The stamped images are embossed and then shaded with Stampin' Up! inks and a blender pen.

I've tried to show in these detail pics the amount of fussy cutting on the stamped images. McSteamy better make room for me at Seattle Grace with the amount of "precision" cutting I did. LOL!

Since the theme of the layout focuses on my son's learning to ride a bicycle without training wheels, I tried to reinforce the wheel theme with lots of circular elements. This detail pic shows all the popped up and dimensional circular details along the side border.

I thought the colors in the paper and the stamped images nicely compliment the bright colors in the pictures. The layout uses Basic Grey's new Lime Rickey collection (can you tell how much I love it?!). The "wheel" accents in the upper right are inspired by BG's print ad for the collection:

The "today you" label stamp at the bottom is an Ali Edwards set by Technique Tuesday. I love the whole set but I mostly got the set for the little border stamp that says, "THIS MOMENT, THIS STORY, THIS DAY, THIS EXPERIENCE, THIS LIFE." The date stamp is a Heidi Swapp stamp - isn't it amazing how similar the "handwriting" is in both sets?




The journaling says, "TODAY YOU decided you were done with training wheels. You set your mind and achieved your goal. With determination like that, you can do anything you can IMAGINE."


Finally, here's a pic of my son "proudly" displaying the finished layout. Is that not the epitome of a hurry-up-Mah-ah-ahm-and-take-the-picture look? There was a much more interesting and pressing Buzz Lightyear Nintendo 64 demo competing for his attention.
